Tooth Abrasion
Abrasion is a process of wear of enamel and tooth structure as a result of external mechanical forces, usually related to the way teeth are brushed or the use of inappropriate materials.
Main causes
- Use of very hard brushes
- Incorrect brushing technique (excessive horizontal friction)
- Use of very abrasive toothpastes
- Harmful habits (opening objects with teeth, biting hard objects)
- Repeated mechanical trauma
Signs and symptoms
- Visible wear of enamel
- Sensitivity to cold and heat
- Lines or grooves on the tooth surface, near the tooth neck
- Aesthetic change in tooth shape
How is it treated
- Composite reconstruction – placement of material to cover the damaged area and protect dentin.
- Veneer or crown – in more advanced and aesthetically sensitive cases.
- Replacement of brushing technique – professional instruction for proper brushing.
- Appropriate brushes and toothpaste – soft brushes and non-abrasive toothpaste are recommended.
Why is treatment important?
If left untreated, abrasion can progress to dentin exposure, high sensitivity, tooth shape deterioration, and the need for more invasive treatments in the future.
