Periodontitis Treatment

Periodontitis is the advanced stage of gum disease.

Periodontitis Treatment

Periodontitis is the advanced stage of gum disease, where inflammation affects not only the gums but also the bone that holds the tooth, threatening its stability. Early treatment is essential to stop bone loss and preserve teeth.

How does periodontitis manifest?

  • Red, swollen gums that bleed
  • Bad breath
  • Gum recession
  • Tooth mobility
  • Pain or sensitivity in the gums

How is treatment performed?

  • 1. Deep periodontal cleaning (Scaling & Root Planing) - This is the first and most important step. With special instruments, bacteria, plaque, and tartar are removed below the gum line, cleaning the tooth root and reducing inflammation.
  • 2. Antibiotic therapy (local or systemic) - Used in cases where infection is severe or when periodontal pockets are deep. Helps eliminate bacteria that cannot be reached by cleaning alone.
  • 3. Control and periodontal maintenance - After initial treatment, the patient must come regularly for professional cleaning and monitoring, usually every 3–6 months, to prevent recurrence of the disease.
  • 4. Surgical treatments (if necessary) - In deep periodontal pockets or advanced bone damage, procedures such as: Periodontal flap surgery, Bone reconstruction (GBR), Tissue reconstruction (guided regeneration) may be recommended. These procedures create better access for cleaning and help restore lost structure.

Result

Periodontitis treatment is an ongoing process that requires cooperation between patient and dentist. With early treatment and regular maintenance, it is possible to control the disease and preserve teeth for years to come.
