Periostitis is inflammation of the periosteum, the thin layer that covers the bone. In the dental field, this condition usually appears around the jawbone as a result of an untreated dental infection, usually coming from the tooth root or surrounding tissues.
Most common causes
- Advanced tooth infection (pulpitis or abscess)
- Trauma or bone damage
- Infections after tooth extraction
- Untreated periodontal diseases
Symptoms
- Severe, throbbing pain in the affected area
- Swelling of gums and face
- High sensitivity to touch
- Sometimes, fever and general feeling of fatigue
Treatment
Periostitis treatment consists of eliminating the source infection, which may include: Endodontic treatment (root canals) or removal of the infected tooth, Use of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, In more severe cases, surgical drainage of the area to remove infection. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent the spread of infection and further bone damage.
