Pulpitis Treatment

Pulpitis is inflammation of the tooth nerve (pulp).

Pulpitis Treatment

Pulpitis is inflammation of the tooth nerve (pulp), usually caused by deep caries, trauma, fractures, or previous dental treatments. At this stage, the tooth often presents severe, throbbing pain, especially at night or in response to cold and heat. Pulpitis treatment is essential to prevent the spread of infection and tooth loss.

How is treatment performed?

  • 1. Removal of caries - Initially, caries is completely cleaned and any damaged part of the tooth is removed to reach the affected pulp.
  • 2. Removal of infected nerve - If pulpitis is irreversible (severely damaged nerve), then the following must be performed: Nerve removal, Cleaning of root canals from bacteria and inflamed tissues, Their disinfection with special materials and solutions. This procedure stops pain and eliminates infection.
  • 3. Canal closure (obturation) - After the tooth is cleaned and sterilized, canals are closed with biocompatible materials to prevent return of bacteria.
  • 4. Tooth reconstruction - Depending on the damage, the tooth can be reconstructed with: composite filling, crown, or veneer, if necessary.

Symptoms of pulpitis

  • Severe spontaneous pain
  • Pain at night
  • High sensitivity to cold or heat
  • Pain that spreads to the ear, jaw, or head
  • Swelling (in advanced stages)

Why is prompt treatment important?

If pulpitis is left untreated, the infection spreads beyond the root, causing: abscess, bone infection, cyst, and risk of tooth loss.
